Eating Disorder Unit, The Priory Hospital, London
(IPA Design Group, 2005)
Stripped back almost to its shell, the new unit was designed for the first time to meet the needs of its current staff and patients. In designing the unit it was vital to work closely with the staff and patients to understand how it would be run, what daily life would be like and how the patients living experience could be improved. Initial site analysis also revealed that the new unit should be less institutional and provide more space for the presentation of patient artwork and self-expression. In order to prevent every bedroom looking the same different elements were manipulated to create diversity, the drawers of the furniture were also designed to be interchangeable.
